Become an independent graphic designer
Verified 01 January 2026 - Entreprendre Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
As a graphic designer, you are first and foremost a communicating. You have to pass a message. You give one visual identity to all types of documents that pass through your hands. You are also a creator, your achievements are protected by the copyright.
In this sheet we explain how to launch, build your customers, prepare quotes and contracts, manage your accounting and your taxationetc.
Step-by-step approach
A job as a communicator
Being a graphic designer is to make a job of communication.
You must first and foremost get a message out, throughvisual elements, charts.
All media are conceivable: print (paper), digital, object, web (internet), video.
Any type of visual shapes you may be asked: logo, book model, drawing (animated or not, motion design), graphic identity of a website (web design), font, graphic charter, packaging of a brand, etc.
The job is very multidisciplinary. You can be a model maker, graphic designer, motion designer, artistic director (AD), etc.
Example :
You can become artistic director (DA) in graphic design. It is then better to be competent in several disciplines and to know how to call on other professionals (illustrator, photographer, etc.). If you work for print, you will need to work with printers, manufacturers, be able to control the printing steps and make paper choices.
Your creation can serve a commercial or non-commercial purpose, an advertising campaign, an association action, a festival, the visual identity of a company, a chain of shops, a baker or a luxury brand, etc.
Today's graphic designer is not necessarily a draftsman, even if it can be a “plus”. If you are not good at drawing, you will need for example, depending on the project, the collaboration of an illustrator.
FYI
The professional title Designer is created and registered in the National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP) from the October 1, 2024. To benefit from this, the holders of the national diploma of crafts and design mention graphic design issued by the ministry responsible for higher education and research, must demonstrate competence in motion design and video production.

- Freedom. You decide on your schedules, you choose your workplace and the colleagues with whom you may wish to share an office (coworking). So you must be disciplined and regular.
- Loneliness. Even if you hire an accountant for your financial management, even if you work in coworking, you will often be the only one to take the important decisions (work, quotes, contracts, choice of partners and customers, evolution and development of activity, etc.).
They will be experienced as advantages for some, as disadvantages for others.
You must think ahead to what suits you or not.
Some tests prepared by CCI: titleContent France can help you define your character traits and skills in relation to an independent contractor activity.

Knowing how to draw is not essential, it all depends on your choices, your orders. But drawing can be an additional asset. - Your experience : graphic designer beginner to confirmed
- The locality : small, medium or large city
- Your status or your company : artist-author, entrepreneur, alone or partner, small or large business
It is advisable to define your hourly cost or a daily flat rate.
The rates are very variable. You will find advice from other experienced graphic designers.
For a beginner, the hourly cost is between €60 and €90 of the hour.

The House of Artists has developed a simulator to help artists determine the cost of their work.
Assignment of rights of use and exploitation
The goal is for the customer to use your creation.
So you have to give them a right of use, which is called the assignment of exploitation rights.
The exploitation of your work generally consists of its reproduction and dissemination for commercial purposes.
You must define how you allow this reproduction and this dissemination.
Charging for copyright to a customer actually means to charge him the right to use your work.
The use of your work must be defined precisely according to 3 parameters:
- Format : web or print, how many copies if it is a print format, how many variations envisaged (business card, brochure, banners), how many establishments concerned if it is a commercial sign, etc.
- Duration : for example 1 to 3 months for an advertising campaign, 10 years for the logo of a craftsman
- Territory : local, national or international broadcasting

- who owns the rights (you)
- which will use your work
- how
- how many time
- and where.
Example :
If you create a logo for an artisan baker, the duration of operation may be 10 years, on all types of media (flyers, business card, posters, website, etc.), in the geographical area of activity of the artisan.
The contract must be drafted clearly and precise.
Indeed, in case of problem (legal recourse), inaccuracies such as for example the mention "etc" which would be used for define the rights you assign, will be penalizing.
Please note
The Maison des artistes provides models of rights assignment contracts, by type of assignment : artist residency, commissioning of services, exhibition in a gallery, free transfer (donation), partnership agreement, etc.
Quote
Before before writing a quote, you must have previously defined your fees, i.e. your hourly cost or your daily package.
To the writing the quotation, on more important is to define the time that you will put to realize the command. This evaluation is done in connection with your customer.
It's about being fair, clear, precise, and agreement with your client.
The quote is the contract that acts on the employment relationship between you and your client. It's an element of dialog.
Don't be afraid to talk money.
To be valid, the quote must be signed by the 2 parties (you and the customer).
You must not begin your creative work before this signed agreement.
Even if it is not an obligation, making a quote is advisable.
Mandatory information on your quotes, invoices, contracts, etc.
Plus of the elements described in the previous paragraphs (who, how, where, how long, what rate, etc.), you should consider including the following other points:
- Identification numbers: Siret, and usefully but optionally your APE code (or NAF code)
- Intra-Community VAT number or the mention: "VAT not applicable, Article 293 B of the General Tax Code" if you are in basic VAT exemption.
- Intellectual property : clause assigning exploitation rights (you define the rights assigned). Give the references of the Intellectual Property Code, for example: “Articles L111-1 et seq. defining copyright” and “Article L. 131-3 specifying the particulars to be indicated in the exploitation contracts”
Also specify if the assignment is exclusive or not, and if so for how long.
- Terms of sale and mention of the Commercial Code: "Articles L 441-3 and L 443-6 of the Commercial Code" with for example the payment period, the penalty in case of late payment, etc.
What is your income?
Your income can be as diverse as your statutes.
You can thus receive income from your copyright and fees, which together constitute turnover your self-employment benefits.
To declare your income, you must go to theparticular space of tax website
.
Taxes: access to your space Private
For your activity as an artist author, you must check the "professional non-commercial income".
Designating your income, you will often hear about non-commercial profits, NCO.
If you also carry out a commercial, craft or commercial activity in parallel, you will tick the box for "professional industrial and commercial income".
In the case of an employed activity, you will tick the box "Salaries and wages", the tax administration will have pre-filled it.
Which tax regime to choose?
You have the choice between 2 great options:
- The regime micro-fiscal said simplified regime with a simplified declaration if you are under the status of the micro(auto)-company. We then talk about micro-BNC to designate your profits. It is automatic if your turnover does not exceed the authorized threshold of €77,700. If you exceed this threshold for 2 consecutive years, you automatically exit the micro-tax system.
- The regime normal said of the controlled reporting. The choice depends mainly on the amount of your annual turnover.
To note : above €77,700even if you are a micro-entrepreneur, you can choose the normal controlled reporting regime.
This choice has consequences in particular on the amount of your deduction for business expenses (deductible expenses or overhead costs)
Warning
Revenue generated from 1er January 2026 (and reported in 2027) is submitted, for the application of the micro-entrepreneur (micro-fiscal) tax system, to new thresholds, of which the amount will be set by the finance law for 2026. This law must be passed in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the budgetary provisions planned for 2025 have been renewed by a special law no. 2025-1316 of 26 december 2025.
You can usefully consult the practical sheet “ Completing your tax return ” of the Maison des artistes.
We're talking about overhead costs or deductible expenses.
Example :
These include, for example, heating your professional studio, licensing your software, renewing your computer hardware, etc.
You can deduct them from your receipts to lower your taxes.
Your taxable income is what is called your taxable profit. It is calculated by the difference between your revenue and your expenses (your expenses).
So you have to maintain a detailed accounting record and regular your expenses and your recipes.
Depending on the tax system you choose, you will be entitled to different abatement conditions for your overhead costs.
The percentage of discount on your profits will be different (i.e. package for the simplified plan, i.e. the actual costs for the normal plan).

The House of Artists make available to its members chartered accountants and tax specialists to assist them in their statements.
