What electronic equipment should use the universal charger (USB-C)?

Verified 17 June 2026 - Entreprendre Service Public / (Prime Minister)

Many new electronic equipment must have a USB Type-C port to be compatible with the universal charger. We present the regulations to you.

The obligation to include a USB Type-C port (standards NF EN IEC 62680-1-2 and 62680-1-3) applies to electronic equipment that can be recharged by means of a wired recharge.

It shall apply to:

  • Portable mobile phones
  • Tablets
  • Digital Cameras
  • Headsets
  • Headsets
  • Portable video game consoles
  • Portable speakers (speakers, etc.)
  • Digital Readers
  • Keyboards
  • Mouse
  • Portable navigation systems (GPS: titleContentetc.)
  • In-ear headphones.

This obligation has applied since April 28, 2026 laptops placed on the market from that date.

Please note

Electronic equipment which is not charged with a wired device (e.g. induction charging) is not subject to the obligation.

When such equipment is offered for sale, a charging device shall not be provided systematically. The customer must be able to choose whether or not to purchase a charging device at the same time as his equipment.

One pictogram whether or not the loading device is present shall be printed on the packaging or affixed to the packaging in the form of a sticker. This pictogram is indicated at Article 3 of an order available on Legifrance.

Where the equipment is made available to consumers and other users, the pictogram shall be displayed in a visible and legible manner and, in the case of distance selling, close to the price indication.

FYI

Information on the charging capacities and compatible charging devices shall also be affixed to the electronic equipment.
