Retrofit premium for individual business vehicles

The retrofit premium is a aid for the conversion of vehicles with a thermal engine into an electric engine (also called « retrofit »). It takes the form of a variable payment or a deduction from the cost of converting the vehicle. For individual businesses, it shall apply to passenger cars, vans, small tourist trains and motor vehicles (2 or 3 wheels) and quadricycles.
What applies to you ?
Private car
The retrofit premium for passenger cars (VP) can be attributed to any natural person (e.g. an executive of a business, individual entrepreneur) domiciled in France whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €26,200.
In order to benefit from this, the individual contractor's combustion engine passenger car must have been converted into a electric or hybrid motor.
Beneficiary of the retrofit premium of a passenger car (I)
Vehicles eligible for the retrofit premium for passenger cars must meet all of the following conditions.
Category of vehicle
These vehicles belong to the category M1 (Vehicle designed and constructed for the carriage of persons and comprising not more than 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat).
Non-assignment of the vehicle
Vehicles must not have been transferred by the purchaser or the holder of a lease:
- Within one year from the date of billing of the conversion of the vehicle
- And before you've covered at least 6,000 kilometers
Transformation to electric or hybrid powertrain
These vehicles shall:
- Either have been the subject of a conversion of a vehicle with a thermal engine into battery or fuel cell electric motor
- Either have been the subject of a conversion of a vehicle with a thermal engine into hybrid powertrain and meet the following conditions:
- Have been the subject of a transformation from a vehicle with a thermal engine to a motorized vehicle that uses electricity as a partial source of energy and whose equivalent range in all-electric mode in the city is greater than 50 kilometers (motorization hybrid)
- Have been registered in France in a definitive series (SIV number) or in a normal series
- Have been registered :
- Before 1er January 2011, for a vehicle using diesel as its main fuel
- Before 1er January 2006, for a vehicle that does not use diesel as its main fuel (e.g. a petrol vehicle)
- Are not damaged vehicles (in the light of an expert report drawn up by an insurer, for example following an accident) or are the subject of an insurance contract valid for at least one year on the date it is handed over for destruction or on the date of invoicing of the vehicle acquired or rented
- Are not pledged

The amount of the retrofit premium depends on the type of conversion of the vehicle:

Transformation to an electric motor
The retrofit premium for vehicles whose engine has been converted to fully electric shall be:
- Either 80% the cost of processing, within the limit of €5,000 , for individual entrepreneurs:
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €7,500
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300and whose journey length, made exclusively with their vehicle, between their home and their place of work is greater than 30 kilometers
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and driving more than 12,000 kilometers per year as part of their professional activity with their vehicle
- Either €1,500, in other cases
Transformation to a hybrid powertrain
The amount of the retrofit premium for vehicles whose engine has been converted to hybrid is:
- Either 80% the cost of processing, up to €3,000 for individual entrepreneurs:
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €7,500
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and whose journey length, made exclusively with their vehicle, between their home and their place of work is greater than 30 kilometers
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and driving more than 12,000 kilometers per year as part of their professional activity with their vehicle
- Either €500 within the limit of the cost of conversion, including all taxes, if the vehicle is acquired by a natural person whose reference tax income per unit is less than or equal to €16,300.
Please note
Cars eligible for the retrofit premium that use petrol, natural gas, LPG, ethanol or superethanol as a partial source of energy must emit a maximum of 132 grams of CO2 per kilometer (104 grams of CO2 per kilometer via the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) method or via NEDC-c).
Individual entrepreneurs with a reference tax income above €16,300 are not eligible for the retrofit premium for cars converted into hybrid motor vehicles.

Is an approach necessary to benefit from the retrofit premium?
Automotive professionals performing the vehicle transformation advance the retrofit premium to their customers. Therefore, no request should be made by the owner of the vehicle.
How is the retrofit premium paid?
The retrofit premium is advance to its beneficiary by the automotive professionals who have carried out the conversions of the vehicle. In this case, the aid shall apply in full to the amount, including all taxes (TTC), of the vehicle mentioned on the purchase or rental invoice, after any discount, rebate, deduction or advantage granted by the seller.
The aid must appear clearly on the invoice with the words: ‘Ecological bonus - Aid for the purchase and rental of low-emission vehicles’.

The automotive professional who makes the advance payment of the retrofit premium to the customer is required to:
- conclude an agreement with the Payment and Services Agency (ASP)
- and file the refund request on theBonusEco extranet

Signature of an agreement between the automotive professional and the Payment and Services Agency
The beneficiary of the retrofit premium must return the amount within 3 months from the date of transfer, where the vehicle which enabled it to benefit from it is assigned in at least one of the following circumstances :
- Within one year from the date of billing of the conversion of the vehicle
- Before you have at least:
- 6,000 kilometers for vans and passenger cars
- 10,000 kilometers for small tourist road trains
- 2,000 kilometers for two- or three-wheel motor vehicles and motor quadricycles
Penalty for non-compliance with the conditions of the retrofit premium
Pickup
The retrofit premium for vans can be awarded to any individual entrepreneur domiciled in France whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €26,200.
In order to benefit from this, the individual contractor's heat engine van must have been converted into a electric or hybrid motor.
Beneficiaries of the retrofit premium of a van (I)
The vehicles that can benefit from the retrofit premium for vans are those that meet all of the following conditions.
Categories of vehicles
These vehicles belong to:
- Either to the category of vans N1 (vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods with a maximum weight of 3,5 tons or less)
- Either to the category N2 (vehicle designed and constructed for the carriage of goods with a maximum weight exceeding 3,5 tons and not exceeding 12 tons) which meet the following criteria:
- They benefit from derogations applicable to vehicles fueled by gas, natural gas for vehicles, electric accumulators or alternative propulsion systems. These derogations correspond to the weight in running order of either the gas generator and its accessories, or natural gas for vehicles and its accessories, or accumulators and their accessories, or mechanical energy storage units and their accessories. This applies within the limit of 2 tons.
- They have a PTAC: titleContent (maximum mass that a vehicle may contain) not exceeding 3,5 tons.
Non-assignment
Vehicles must not have been transferred by the purchaser or the holder of a lease:
- Within one year from the date of billing of the conversion of the vehicle
- And before you've covered at least 6,000 kilometers
Transformation
These vehicles shall:
- Or have undergone a conversion of a vehicle with a thermal engine in battery or fuel cell electric motor
- Either have been the subject of a conversion of a vehicle with a thermal engine into hybrid powertrain and meet the following conditions:
- Have been the subject of a transformation from a vehicle with a thermal engine to a motorized vehicle that uses electricity as a partial source of energy and whose equivalent range in all-electric mode in the city is greater than 50 kilometers (motorization hybrid)
- Were registered in France in a definitive series (SIV number) or in a normal series
- The following have been registered:
- Before 1er January 2011, for a vehicle using diesel as its main fuel
- Before 1er January 2006, for a vehicle that does not use diesel as its main fuel (e.g. a petrol vehicle)

Vans covered by the retrofit premium (I)
The amount of the retrofit premium depends on the type of conversion of the vehicle:

Transformation to an electric motor
The retrofit premium for vehicles whose engine has been converted to fully electric is 40% the cost of processing, within the limit of:
- Either €4,000, for Class I vehicles
- Either €6,000, for Class II vehicles
- Either €8,000, for Class III vehicles and N2 vehicles (vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods with a maximum weight exceeding 3,5 tons and not exceeding 12 tons) eligible for the premium.
The limits indicated are increased by €1,000 for individual entrepreneurs:
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €7,500.
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and whose journey length, made exclusively with their vehicle, between their home and their place of work is greater than 30 kilometers
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and driving more than 12,000 kilometers per year as part of their professional activity with their vehicle
Transformation to a hybrid powertrain
Vans that use gasoline, natural gas, LPG, ethanol or superethanol as a partial source of energy must emit a maximum of 132 grams of CO2 per kilometer, or 104 grams of CO2 per kilometer if the method used to determine emissions uses the new European driving cycle (NEDC) or an alternative method known as NEDC-c.
The amount of retrofit premium for vehicles whose engine has been converted to hybrid is:
- Either 80% the cost of processing, up to €3,000 for individual entrepreneurs:
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €7,500
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and whose journey length, made exclusively with their vehicle, between their home and their place of work is greater than 30 kilometers
- Either whose reference tax income (RFR) per unit is less than or equal to €16,300 and driving more than 12,000 kilometers per year as part of their professional activity with their vehicle
- Either €500 within the limit of the cost of the transformation all taxes included, if the vehicle is acquired by a natural person whose reference tax income per unit is equal to or less than €16,300.
Please note
Individual entrepreneurs with a reference tax income above €16,300 shall not be eligible for the retrofit premium for vans converted into hybrid vehicles.

Is an approach necessary to benefit from the retrofit premium?
Automotive professionals performing the vehicle transformation advance the retrofit premium to their customers. Therefore, no request should be made by the owner of the vehicle.
How is the retrofit premium paid?
The retrofit premium is advance to its beneficiary by the automotive professionals who have carried out the conversions of the vehicle. In this case, the aid shall apply in full to the amount, including all taxes (TTC), of the vehicle mentioned on the purchase or rental invoice, after any discount, rebate, deduction or advantage granted by the seller.

Small tourist road train
The retrofit premium for small tourist road trains can be awarded to any individual entrepreneur domiciled in France.
To benefit from this, the individual contractor must transform a small tourist road train with a thermal engine in battery or fuel cell electric motor.
Beneficiaries of the premium for the retrofit of a small tourist road train (I)
In order to benefit from the retrofit premium, small tourist road trains must meet all of the following conditions:
- Are towing vehicles for small tourist road trains (a combination of vehicles consisting of a towing vehicle equipped with an odometer and trailers, other than a coach or bus, when traveling on roads open to public traffic for the exclusive purpose of touristic activities or on the occasion of commercial events or occasional services)
- Have been the subject of a conversion of a vehicle with a thermal engine into an electric engine battery or fuel cell
- Vehicles must not have been transferred by the purchaser or the holder of a lease:
- Within one year from the date of billing of the conversion of the vehicle
- And before you've covered at least 10,000 kilometers
Conditions relating to the retrofit premium for a small tourist road train (I)
The retrofit premium for small tourist road trains is fixed at 40% the cost of processing, up to €30,000.
Amount of the premium for the retrofit of a small tourist road train (II)

The retrofit premium for motor vehicles (2 or 3 wheels) and motor quadricycles may be awarded to any individual contractor domiciled in France whose reference tax income (RFR) per share is less than or equal to €26,200.
In order to benefit from this, the individual contractor's motor vehicle (2 or 3 wheels) or quadricycle with a thermal engine must have been converted into a battery or fuel cell electric motor.
Beneficiaries of the retrofit premium of a two- or three-wheel motor vehicle or a motor quadricycle (I)
The vehicles eligible for the retrofit premium for motor vehicles are those which meet all of the following conditions. These vehicles shall:
- Belong to the category of 2- or 3-wheel motor vehicles and motor quadricycles (category L)
- Have undergone a conversion from a vehicle with a thermal engine to an electric engine with a battery or a fuel cell
- Must not have been transferred by the purchaser or the holder of a lease:
- Within one year from the date of billing of the conversion of the vehicle
- And before you've covered at least 2,000 kilometers
Conditions relating to the retrofit premium of a two- or three-wheel motor vehicle or a four-wheel motor vehicle (I)
The amount of the retrofit premium for motor vehicles (2 or 3 wheels) and motor quadricycles shall be fixed at €1,100.
