How to limit serious and fatal accidents at work?

In order to reduce the number of accidents at work, the Ministry of Labor and Employment is launching a prevention campaign. The aim is to raise awareness among employers and employees about the risks of accidents.

During 2024, 549,614 accidents at work have been declared for employees of the general scheme. 764 some of them caused a death.

Indeed, every day in France, more than 100 employees are seriously injured and 2 die.

In order to reduce these high figures, the Ministry of Labor and Employment has prevention campaign relying on a communication kit. This includes a complete file Prevention of serious and fatal accidents at work divided into 4 parts:

  1. in the past 10 years, serious and fatal workplace accidents have reached a plateau;
  2. aggravating factors of accidents;
  3. prevention to reduce the number of severe and fatal occupational injuries in companies;
  4. prevention stakeholders (in the company, at local level, at national level).

Workplace accidents in numbers

The campaign also highlights the importance of preventing accidents:

  • affecting those under 25 (3% of work-related deaths in 2024);
  • within one year of taking up a post (22% of fatal accidents at work, 67% for those under 25);
  • related to road safety (22% of fatal work accidents), the risk of falling from a height, the risk of manual handling...

Finally, it recalls the economic impact caused by these accidents. In 2024, accidents at work accounted for more than 54 million days of work lost.

Reminder

So that a be recognized, 2 conditions must be completed:

  • the accidental fact (sudden and unexpected) in the working environment ;
  • the accident caused a physical and/or psychological damage.
