For this number of Meeting withWe went to meet Fanny Potagnik, economic development officer and environmental expert at the Chamber of Trades and Crafts of Haute-Garonne (31). With her, we talked about how to reduce and recover waste as part of her craft activity.

In what cases can a craft company turn to you for its waste?

We accompany craftsmen in 2 cases:

  • artisans facing an emergency situation and regulatory pressure: those who end up with waste on their hands because they are no longer accepted in waste disposal facilities or by their community;
  • the caring craftsmen to initiate more virtuous management : those entering the circular economy and benefiting economically from it.

How does the support work in practice?

I go to the company to realize a waste diagnosis. Indeed, we can only improve what we measure. Together with the manager, we review the company's waste, its management and assess its current cost. I often talk about “ the iceberg of waste costs ». Behind a discarded baguette, there is a quantity of flour, energy to run the oven, salaried time. Smaller companies don't necessarily track their loss. It's a first step!

After this assessment, we put in place an action plan to:

  • meet regulatory requirements for waste traceability;
  • improving stock management and adapting production;
  • making waste disposal more reliable by linking it to specialized collection providers ; with the Grand Ouest Toulousain Agglomération, we worked for example on the implementation of a door-to-door pooled collection of bio-waste from the companies of the agglomeration with a specialist service provider;
  • facilitate, for the smallest craftsmen, the deposit of their waste in collective composters in return for commitments (volume per week, recycling of composting, etc.);
  • reduce waste because the best waste is still the one that is not produced; this action also makes it possible to value its efforts with consumers or in the context of competition with the “Zero Waste Company” label of the CMA Occitanie.

We also inform companies about extended producer responsibility (REP) verifying that they are subject to it and informing them about collection and other services solutions implemented by the eco-organization of their sector. These solutions are financed by eco-contributions. Craftsmen, especially in the construction industry or in bicycle repair, are unaware of the solutions available to them.

Support on waste can finally be part of a broader picture of possible savings. The “TPEs win on all costs” system allows to carry out a diagnosis on the 4 main flows: energy, water, waste, raw materials.

Do you have an example of an accompanied company?

Yes, I recently accompanied a company specializing in the arrangement and manufacture of bathroom furniture. When I was diagnosed, I found that their waste management costs were significant.

When I looked at the bills, I realized she was paying twice the eco-contribution in the context of the EPR. His timber supplier charged him the eco-contribution for building materials, and the company also paid the eco-body a contribution for the marketing of furniture. After discussions with the eco-organization, we were able to remove the regulatory ambiguity and justify to the supplier the end of the billing of the eco-contribution.

I also accompanied a carpentry company on the sorting of its waste. I first advised him to cover his 2 dumpsters outside because they are billed by weight by the provider. But with the rain, they filled with water.

Then, the scraps of medium panels, now recoverable, continued to be thrown into the more expensive billed bin dedicated to non-recoverable wood scraps. The claimant had not informed the company of this development. By tipping 20% of the scraps into the reusable wooden skip, the carpentry company has significantly reduces its waste treatment costs.
